Text[edit]
- The Legend of Long-Ear Lexx—there's a pirate seal on this document. It has fared surprisingly well, considering its age.
- Read it.
- First time I saw Long-Ear Lexx, he stood on the gang plank, hands on hips, and he shouted, "Captain! Permission to join your crew!" I'd never heard of an asura on a ship's crew. It was absurd! I was intrigued.
- Read on.
- Lexx became the mate in the crow's nest. He could swing from giff to boom and mainsail to jib, and he climbed the shrouds like a maguuma spider. I was tickled rummy to have him on my ship.
- Read on.
- Even his regular conflicts with other sailors didn't outweigh his contribution to the crew. I reprimanded him when necessary, but I liked him so well, it was hard to stay cross for long.
- Read on.
- When the time came for me to retire, there was no better replacement. I told him and saw sadness in his eyes for the first time ever. It was then that I realized he valued our friendship as much as I did.
- Read on.
- One balmy day, he called to me and indicated an island on the horizon. My retirement had arrived. I dove off the ship. As far as anyone but Lexx knew, I'd slipped overboard and drowned.
- Read on.
- The truth was, I was swam to the island and live there now, though I spend many evenings looking out to sea, wondering what became of Captain Long-Ear Lexx, my successor, my friend, and a very strange sort of sailor.
- Read on.
- Last time I saw Long-Ear Lexx, he was high above the deck, on the topsail yard, one hand holding onto the mast. The ship sped away at a fast clip, and his ears flapped out behind him in the wind. His eyes met mine, and he smiled one of his rare beauties.
