Template talk:Inventory/Vendor subpage header
What the heck am I doing?[edit]
See Talk:Guild commendation trader#Acessories table and User talk:Chieftain Alex#Previews when editing vendor tables for some context: tl;dr somebody tried to edit a vendor table, but the table itself disappeared when he hit "show preview" so he didn't want to risk making the change. To fix that, I've got to go through and edit all the vendor tables to avoid wrapping the table itself with <includeonly>.
But since I'm editing every page anyway, it makes sense to edit the <noinclude> paragraph at the top (or sometimes bottom) of each page to say the same thing for each of them, and if I'm going to do *that* then I should put the text onto its own subtemplate so that the next person that wants to come along and edit the help text doesn't have to edit each page individually. (Some of them still have the "This page is meant inclusion" typo at the top, for instance! It makes no sense to have a separate copy of that text on 50 separate templates.).
Also note that even if we put most of the docs on {{Inventory}} (which is pretty much the current situation anyway), we'd still want a link from each vendor list template back to {{Inventory}} so people can find it when they arrive at the vendor list template. So we'd still want to have some identical text at the top of every vendor list template. -- Dagger (talk) 02:15, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- Helps to move the discussion to the template talk page and refer in edit summaries so I can catch up. I'd wrap the tables in <onlyinclude> tags. The inventory template should also have details on editing the subpages. If we want to provide information on the subpages themselves, a basic form would be an improvement.--Relyk ~ talk < 02:29, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- I edited some help into {{Inventory}}... but I sorta missed that you edited it 30m before so I may have clobbered some bits. -- Dagger (talk) 03:42, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- So the [[Form:Vendor table row]] is still complete garbage on loading time on large templates but would work fine for small tables. Users who can't write wikicode can still contribute with that option. Everything also seems to break adding form links on the form page, but whatever. I'm just happy to have my autocomplete dropdown for looking at the tables.--Relyk ~ talk < 07:20, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- And show preview doesn't work, so it's not exactly helpful...--Relyk ~ talk < 07:30, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

- Which was the main problem I was trying to fix. Lovely. I guess I'll go ahead with putting this header on every page? Even with a form it'll probably be helpful for anyone not using it or arriving at the page directly. And we already have a header on each page, it's just that it's been copy/pasted and there's no consistency anywhere. -- Dagger (talk) 00:54, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
