Template talk:Conjure nav
"Conjure" is not a noun[edit]
Any English dictionary will tell you that conjure is a verb, not a noun. The site dictionary.reference.com, which is an American dictionary, says the same. And somewhere towards the end, mentions in passing that somewhere in the southern parts of the USA voodoo land, some people use it as a noun. For all practical purposes, and to almost all English-speaking people, therefore, it is confusing, not to say wrong, to see the word used as a noun label next to other nouns. Hence my change of the word Conjure in this template, to the word Skill (since this is what that link points to).
Similarly, the word "Charges" in this template implies that by clicking there I will see some information about the number of charges of the conjured weapon. But it is in fact a link to the in-game icon/effect which displays the number of remaining charges in real time. Hence my change of the word Charges, to Charges Effect.
And lastly, the same applies to my change of the word Attributes, to Attributes Effect, because the page you are taken to describes the effect and its icon.
Oh and the title should be Conjured Weapons, obviously.
I am very tempted to revert back the changes (undo the undo). But I won't. Let others consider this question and act accordingly. --Alad 04:20, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Conjure is a skill type, and thus, treated as a noun. That's beside the point. Conjure, Charges, and Attributes are all abbreviations of the actual articles names they link to. The point is to keep the nav compact.--Relyk ~ talk > 04:48, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- A verb treated as a noun? Really? :D
- And my point was precisely the fact that the nav was so heavily abbreviated, it didn't mean anything. But you made it, so it was perfect :) --Alad 06:40, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Actually, "conjure" is a jargon word, so the standard grammar rules have to be stretched to accommodate how its used in the game. The first word for the in-game description of Conjure Frost Bow is "Conjure," referring to the skill's type, which is, as used in the game, a noun. The wiki should follow proper grammar, but sometimes that means deviating from the formal dictionary definitions.
- However, that aside, I have to agree with the implied criticism: the current setup for conjure skills makes things more confusing than necessary. I understand why completeness demands 3 separate articles for each skill, but I'm not sure why the average player should be expected to read three. Couldn't all the information be included in the main article for each? Then the navbar would reduce to just the names of the skills. 75.37.22.28 07:53, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Come on, this is the most attractive/awesome/useless nav on the wiki! -Chieftain Alex 09:01, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
