Soooooo... Bubbles' minion? Lieutenant, maybe? It has tentacles and lives (will live? has lived?) in an oceanic environment, so we have all the points covered. --User Xhosant Signature.png 17:26, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

nope just a random part of the mists most likely Getefix 18:00, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Well, we do know the fractals are pieces of the past, present or future, alternate or not. So in any case that was an image of the Jade Quarry (gw1), and it is very likely this creature had at least some roots in the typical "reality".--User Xhosant Signature.png 18:23, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
This is the jade sea from gw1, there were some great creatures there (like the deeps leviathan). I doubt this one is related to Bubbles. Lokheit 19:27, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Hey, I was just looking through the screenshots from Wayfarer's Reverie in Guild Wars 1, and I noticed this screenshot of somewhere in the Jade Sea: http://www.guildwars.com/events/ingame/wayfarers-reverie/_img/screenshot02.jpg
... Jade Maw? 174.35.247.117 17:08, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
That's a leviathan; the Jade Maw is a redesign of a kraken. Konig 18:40, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Are we sure that it's actually a Kraken? Where is the source on that? It looks far closer to a Leviathan to me. RisingDusk (talk) 19:50, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Trivia section[edit]

I think it's safe to remove the trivia section as with the introduction of the other boss fractals, Mai Trin and Molten duo, that it's not the only one with unavoidable agony. Not refering to the skull targeting thing.75.187.204.77 17:25, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Agreed and done. Konig 17:38, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Other way to damage the Jade Maw[edit]

darknes field + combo projectile deal damage to Jade Maw. For example, the darkfield of necromancer + ice bow (skill 2) deal a lot of damage to Jade Maw. Probably the Jade Maw is only immune to the normal attack, and it can be only hitted by darkness damage.

That would be life steal damage. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 18:51, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Classified as Kraken?[edit]

If anything it is a leviathan (the GW1 meaning of leviathan) http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Leviathan

There is already a type of creature called leviathan in GW2.... so is that why this is being called a kraken here?

A Kraken in the Guild Wars is a squidlike floating creature.... The Jade Maw is not a squid.... its a leviathan. 98.193.124.175 08:29, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

1) The leviathan was a Undersea Wurm based on the wurms that are seen trapped in jade blocks in the fractal, and seems to be a name for the specific creature and not a species (it is called The Leviathan, after all).
2) Update notes specifically call the Jade Maw a kraken. See here. "Daily Fractals of the Mists bonus chests are awarded after defeating the kraken."
3) The Jade Maw has tentacles. Wurms - and the Leviathan - do not.
The Jade Maw is GW2's reinterpretation (perhaps altered via the Mists) of gw1 krakens. Konig 22:23, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
You're misinformed. Leviathan encompasses a much larger variety of the life from the jade sea which has adapted to live after it was solidified.

I'm well aware of the crustacean creatures dubbed Leviathan <body part>. However, the term for their species is fully player made based upon the shared NPC term, and outright irrelevant to the matter - besides, the The Leviathan is not of the crustacean species players dub leviathans anyways. ArenaNet themselves called the Jade Maw a kraken. That makes it a kraken. There is a species called leviathan in lore, but they are simply gargantuan fish. See: Leviathan. Konig 21:02, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
I am well aware of the Guild Wars 2 creature called the leviathan. I practically wrote that article back in 2013.  :) But you have been smudging information on both the Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 wiki on this particular topic.... altering information to suit your personal views. The word kraken is a loose term used to describe a sea monster, primarily giant squid or octopus, but including but not limited to crab and whale like creatures as well. ..... at no point was the developer referring to the Jade maw's species. If a different word was used say.. "Daily Fractals of the Mists bonus chests are awarded after defeating the sea monster" Would you place its species as "sea monster?" At any rate the Jade maw is considered to be an elementalist by game mechanics. You are the only one who wants to call it a kraken. 98.193.124.175 21:21, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
I haven't smudged any information. The gw1:Leviathan (species) is never actually called 'leviathans' outside of the NPC names. This is why the article is part of gw1:Category:Unofficial terms applied to it. There was, in fact, a point in the past when there was a debate whether to name the species 'crustacean' or 'leviathan'. The latter won due to the NPC names. The only dialogue which refers to the 'leviathans' is gw1:Kristo Trilios which calls them "Creatures kissed by its light". Again, there is no smudging of information.
Krakens take various shapes and forms throughout multiple media, true, but it has a very defined term in Guild Wars - that of a sea faring species known to have existed both in the Jade Sea and Crystal Sea. As a species, it is very specific in what it refers to, unlike the meaning for us players alone, which changes based on the media.
No, I would not place its species as 'sea monster' if Anet used that term, because unlike kraken, sea monster is a description not a species. We know krakens are a species in Guild Wars lore. Anet calls it such. That's what it is.
And elementalist isn't a species either, but a profession. Unless you mean elemental, though I don't think there's a manner to test this since you cannot damage the Jade Maw with weapons thus the Sigil of Elemental Slaying and potions of Elemental Slaying should have no effect on it. It is surrounded by elementals though. But if you can prove it, that's what it should be labeled as, with a note about it being a kraken in lore similar to how Grubs are considered wurms mechanically despite not being the same kind of creature in lore. But I have never seen or heard of such a thing before and I run fractals practically every other day with folks who have done fractals daily for nearly two years straight. Konig 23:51, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
And as for the last comment: until the kraken mention in update notes came about, I had thought - like you - that it was a leviathan (or rather, I thought it was a leviathan/kraken hybrid created by the Mists - thus a species denotation of any kind would end up being false). I only say that it should be kraken because that's what ArenaNet calls it. My opinion, your opinion - none of it matters in the fact of ArenaNet's opinion in regards to the documentation of the game's facts. Konig 23:54, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't remember ArenaNet calling it anything specific in-game or blog posts. Can we leave it as unknown/uncertain and have a note about origins?--Relyk ~ talk < 00:07, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
Please look at my first response (point 2 specifically). I had provided a link to 2013 game update notes (which are presented on the blog and official forums) calling it a kraken. Konig 01:35, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Again.... not calling it "a kraken" but "the kraken" synonymous with "the big sea monster" 98.193.124.175 05:37, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Hardly. It's "the kraken" because there is no other kraken in the Fractals (or in the game currently). There's no reason why Anet would use kraken to mean 'big sea monster' - literally none, especially when the term has specific meaning in the game and lore. Konig 08:30, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
