Talk:Evade
Right, erm. Evade isn't just a skill available to animal companions... sort this out? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Negius (talk • contribs).
Might be useful to remove the redirect and create its own page as certain skills like Ranger greatsword auto attack make you 'evade attacks' while doing them, which has nothing to do with the dodge skill. 173.66.74.222 15:37, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
wrong talk page remnant?[edit]
It seem that this talk page is connected to Dodge, while dodge has is own talk page Talk:Dodge. Evade is a redirect to dodge. Should this get merge? Tech Wolf-Talk 15:44, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Evade versus Avoid[edit]
Food for thought. You jump/dodge out of the way 1 sec or more before the hit lands. You aren't hit, but you don't get the Evaded! message on the screen (1 sec is too early). The result is the same, though: you avoided damage. You dodge out of the way a split second before the hit lands, and you get the message. That gets me thinking about the real differences between avoiding a hit and "evading" it. I'd like to propose some thoughts about the distinction between simply "getting out of the way" and "evading", in the hope of better understanding it, and better explaining it on this page:
- The evade mechanic can be useful for the developers because it's a specific event (defined by stringent timing and preconditions too perhaps), to which they can attach things like a boon-on-evade, etc.., while "getting out of the way" is not specific enough to be an event (it's just moving, and you move all the time). Hence a more stringent time constraint to get out of the impact point "in the nick of time" (and perhaps, this is where I'm unsure, a precondition to use specific skills for that).
- Is it possible to just jump (not dodge) out of the way and get the Evaded! message?
- A giant's hammer hitting the ground with an AoE: If you jump/run (without "evading") out of the AoE in time, you're safe. If you just jump/run out of the hammer's impact point, but are still in the AoE when it lands, you'll get damage. However, if you "evade" out of the hammer's impact point, but still land in the AoE, you won't be damaged (not certain of this, but pretty sure). If this is true, it suggests that the "evade" protection/immunity can last a certain time even after you land. I.e. that there is an immunity from direct damage and AoE damage attached to evading, and it lasts for a variable time. (Is there an impact "point" for that AoE hammer? Or is it the whole AoE that's the "point"? How long does the "impact" last? How high up from the ground does it reach? (You could be in the air when it hits.))
- What really are the differences between the skills that mention "evade" in their description, and other skills which allow you to evade as well (like leaps, for example... do they allow you to evade?) Does a specific mention of evasion in the skill description mean that a period of immunity is attached? Less stringent timing conditions? I.e. to contrast with dodge-evade, you use an "evade" skill 1 sec before the hit lands, and you do evade? (whereas you wouldn't have with just a dodge).
Very interested to hear people's experiences/experimentation/inside information about this. :) --Alad 15:25, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- Based on being near/far from enemies while dodging, I think evading is when you would take damage, but since you are in the act of dodging evade it instead. So, if you dodge out of range of an attack, it doesn't count as an evade. If you're smack in the middle of an attack but are dodging, then you evade instead of getting hit. --JonTheMon 15:47, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- Jumping and leap skills do not evade. Only dodging and skills that specifically mention "evade" count as evasion actions, and it is only while performing these actions that you will evade attacks that would have normally hit you.
- Jumping can possibly take you vertically outside the active area of a skill or effect, but this is rarely seen since the vertical area of most skills/effects is greater than the jump height. Like Jon said, if you are outside of the skill's active area when the hit lands, then you simply are not hit by the skill. —Dr Ishmael 16:19, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Evade Vs Champions or Better?[edit]
Do evades work against champions or better foes? Do the various counter abilities or other factors of champions or better? I ask because in game play, I don't feel like I get any benefit from skills with evades when facing champions or better.
- There's no reason for it not to work, it's a basic game mechanics. Probably, champions have more complicated behavior, and you can't properly time the dodge? MalGalad 13:58, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- A lot of champions have skills that can't be evaded or blocked. Pay attention to which skills are ignoring your evades and which ones you're still evading, and you'll probably see that it's only a couple specific effects that are hitting you. —Dr Ishmael 14:16, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
