Mad King Movement[edit]

Added a "maybe" to the part where it says he'll teleport around 2% hp. While this is often the case, he can be defeated down there. I've also seen where a team fails to get down there "fast enough" (not clear on the time) and he teleported back to the middle without anyone engaging him at the lower level. 72.201.8.180 17:13, 28 October 2012 (PDT)

Yeah, upon the second playthrough, it seems that it's not the health that triggers it after 25% health. Might be timed. Konig/talk 17:15, 28 October 2012 (PDT)
Quote "At 75% health, Thorn will become invulnerable again and disappear to a lower level ..." this is not always true. Sometimes, he does not teleport to lower level. On my 3rd and 4th run (with another professions), he just teleported and remain on the same level! Please edit. Paladinofmm 18:05, 28 October 2012 (PDT)
He teleports to the second level eventually however! It's pretty random.--Relyk 18:12, 28 October 2012 (PDT)

Ascent to Madness Chest Rewards[edit]

Anyone got better drops other than Masterwork quality items? So far, after 4 runs, only 3 times, my characters got 3 Masterwork items when they opened the chest, whereas got one (2nd run) got a random dye, 5 Trick-or-Treat_Bag and no weapons/armor. Paladinofmm 18:10, 28 October 2012 (PDT)

I got an exotic level 70 torch. I've heard of people getting Mad King armor pieces. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 18:12, 28 October 2012 (PDT)
Ok, so I guess some people are indeed lucky then. My best guess now is that the rewards from the chests at Ascent to Madness and Mad King's Labyrinth will have a small chance of dropping exotic and Mad King armor pieces. I've got one light armor pants (soulbound it from Mad King's Labyrinth. Paladinofmm 18:19, 28 October 2012 (PDT)
I got the Mad King's Shoulders from it the 2nd time thru today.12.230.34.138 23:04, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Chest rewards now have Two pieces of equipment? I think this is not true, it should be like between one to three pieces of equipments because I've done at least 10 times of run on this dungeon with all my characters, majority I got 3 pieces of Masterwork items, sometimes 2 of them. However, I suspect that it is still random in the sense that some players, including me got one to two Loot Bag from the chest! Double clicking the Loot Bag will give random Crafting material or depending on the type of Loot Bag. Paladinofmm 01:21, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Got a Fixer Upper out of it this year. SarielV 20 x 20px 01:51, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Disappointment[edit]

Anyone else find this more annoying than fun? Very disappointing after all the “you must be there when it happens” for just a poor cinematic, then this! The need to group up with 5 people to experience it is annoying and frustrating, and seems to fail more than work; [constant connecting issues etc]. I know some people can solo it, and I possibly could have if I had wanted to grind through it for that long …. In the end 2 of us did this, but it was slow and a hassle [fear keeps knocking you off platforms]. Not fun, poor rewards. For the first time I have to say, I view this as a fail from Anet. Normally even the stuff I am not fond of is not bad, but this …. This was bad. Bring back the old mad king stuff, the games, the appearances. Not enjoying all this treasure hunt stuff either  58.7.86.210 19:01, 28 October 2012 (PDT)mk

Boo hoo. The cinematic was, imo, superb. Maybe you just had too much lag. A group of five is rather typical for dungeons - no one said events all must be solo-able. Besides, that's recommended party size. Not needed as you yourself demonstrated. The issue with fear you had is due to your own poor placement of your character - if you haven't figured out by now that GW2 is all about placement then there's not much Anet can do, tbh. Rewards felt fine to me. Maybe not if I solo'd him, but that's just punishing yourself and not a fault of ArenaNet - same with 2 folks going at him. Konig/talk 19:08, 28 October 2012 (PDT)
Not "boo hoo'ing", or being one of those "this ruins the game" type people, just stating that i felt it was all very just disappointing. Wondering if others liked or did not like it. For the record, We did have a party of 5, but only 2 managed to turn up [after the 6th try to group up]. Lots of people getting errors, or being shuffled to different servers so it would not move them together. One of the nice things about GW1 and events, is they could be enjoyed alone, but more fun with friends. Would have been nice to have this as scalable for group sizes. As for placement, yeah i know that, but when there is only a few of you, and you keep getting knocked about, fear + edges = bad. It may not be an issue with more people, but when its 1 or 2 of you, it sucks big time.
Also, don't know if you saw a different cinematic to me, or if lag cut mine short, but i saw the statue collapse, and that's it, no mad king, nothing impressive. Will later check out the uploaded youtube clips, see if i did miss something, but was underwhelming. 58.7.86.210 mk
Like the previous Act, I actually quite enjoyed this one. Admittedly, I found the rewards to be lackluster though; Considering I have very little use for a 10 Slot Bag at Lv.80 (already got 12-18 slot ones), and I already have a surplus of the event "junk" items (Candy Corn, Trick-or-Treat Bags) which was all I got on my first go. Still, I quite enjoyed it, and I felt pushing myself to be awake to witness the one-time event—while I could've just as well seen it on YouTube—was worth it, and is going to be one of the "Woah! Neat!" moments in GW2 that I'll treasure in the time ahead for having personally witnessed. Went into the battle with 2 friends, so in total we were 3, and we had little to no problems with clearing it. Most importantly, I had a ton of fun. —Vella 21:12, 28 October 2012 (PDT)

Cool, event happened at 3am here, might also account for my lack of "wow". Even though it is not of much use, the 10 slot bag was nice, something to give a new character. Must admit, at first glance I thought it was 10 trick or treat bags. 58.7.86.210 mk

5 people required? Hogwash! Me and my brother did it as a dynamic duo of a 54 Guardian and a 76 Ranger. Only deaths were from the falls. 67.82.91.198
When you say 5 ppl i'm laughting, laughtin!!! Seriously i did it alone, ALONE, with a level 80 guardian! I spared my armor by dying from fall! Yes, it took me 35 minutes, but i freaking solod him! It was pretty easy, just time consuming!213.114.119.131 02:15, 29 October 2012 (PDT)
Yes Yes your both very impressive, we are all impressed YAWN. I didn't say its impossible to do, i did it as a 2 man team.
My comment was more of a time involved vs reward, so far the best i got was 2 greens and a boost. [oh and the 10 slot bag is soulbound, not account bound, so completely useless].
I was trying to elicit a discussion on what people did or didn't like about the event.
Trying to get back on subject, I miss the bad jokes, and the ability to AFK for part of the event and still get something.
Although i always preferred to be active for as much of the old gw1 event as possible, was nice to leave the comp on and come back to more TOT bags etc. 58.7.86.210 mk
Dying from falling is definitely a good way to avoid broken armor, and the dungeon is totally solo-able. I actually enjoyed it, regardless of the rewards. In GW1 Halloween, nothing like this happened 3 days before the event itself. We just had a bunch of quests. I'm loving this Halloween, and it definitely goes beyond my expectations. -CrazyRabidSquirrel 08:52, 29 October 2012 (PDT)
Well, I did tried to dying by falling but somehow, 1 piece of my armor still broken upon hitting the ground... a bug? Or could it be that I got hit too much till when my character jump to death, the armor is still consider to be broken when my character dies? Paladinofmm 01:13, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Looks like there is still an event with "jokes to die for" so there may still be some of the old mad king style fun to come *fingers crossed* 203.16.182.12 D

Anyone know if it drops black lion keys? --~Danger~ 02:46, 29 October 2012 (PDT)

I dont know, but the chest contain items that you can sell for a good price to kids that dont know what is usefull and what is kid-trap (useless items that anet make them run after). Gold coins means gems, and gems means lion keys. Since the mad king instance is known for being particularly adapted for soloing, it's a good place to go over and over again. That said items built through craftmanship is faster to make gold if you take the time to scan the more demanded/least provided items (20 gold daily for furious players or 4 gold coins every 30 minutes in the evening for casuals like me). Dont forget to always click the 'best offer' when selling what you craft, the 'lowest offer' being checked by default and by design by Anet for everything. Bots are forever out of reach of this because it recquire to adapt to the market regularly. However best opportunities recquire reactivity (i missed a deal of 100 rare espadons that i could have sold for 19 silver each but the furious category of players was way quicker and i was forced to discount a bunch of them). I had the problem that the cutscene was so laggy and choppy that I couldn't really see anything. For example my cutscene didn't load the model of the king. The event itself was solvable with two people and I even heard people who did that solo, but I think that is hardly the standard. - Yandere Talk to me... 04:36, 29 October 2012 (PDT)

Gone back and looked at the you-tube clips of the cinematic, defiantly missed most of it. I only saw the statue explode, then nothing. Missed all of the mad king actually appearing. Now that I have seen it, that was pretty cool. 58.7.86.210 mk

Bug[edit]

I got a bug where I couldn't get to the waypoint. The entire map become blurry and nothing can be clicked on. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.32.145.41 (talk) at 22:59, 29 October 2012 (UTC).

I got one run where my mini map got blurred out, but the world map still can be accessed to and can teleport to the way point. When I exit and enter again with another group of players, it returned back to normal. It could be a bug.... and remember to sign when discussing here. Paladinofmm 01:10, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

More information on diminishing returns for this dungeon?[edit]

How many runs can an account do daily before the 5 PToT bags become fewer than 5?
Also, is the end chest affected by DR too? --175.156.215.209 18:26, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

First run is 5+5, second is 3+3, third and subsequent are 2+2. DR resets ~hourly. Chest has no DR best I can tell, only the pop up. Konig (talk) 18:28, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

Do the enemies in this dungeon drop loot or give experience when you kill them?[edit]

It seems the only sources of loot in this instance are the ground chest and the popup at the end. --219.92.97.66 16:04, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

They do give experience, but not loot. The instance is not bad for a daily run, since it's pretty short, and you can get some drops worth a few gold. —Ventriloquist 22:41, 20 October 2018 (UTC)
