- Chapter 3: Crystal Corruption
Dialogue[edit]
- I'm trying to convince Erli to join the Moot Father competition. He thinks Mog will win for sure, because he brought in a large catch, but he's wrong!
- Tell me more about your friend Erli.
- Erli is the best! He uses these clever traps to catch small game. He can tell right away if one is sprung, but none of the other hunters ever find them. My mother says it was Raven who made him so clever.
- And you want Erli to what?
- Interesting. Thanks for the chat.
- Mog may hunt big, but when he gets back, he yells for someone else to do the gutting and cooking. Not like Erli! He's the best cook around, and he always makes enough to share.
- Ah, what do you know. See you later, kid.
If he can't bring in a good catch, he doesn't deserve to win.
- Sounds dramatic. Good luck with that.
- Have you heard about the time Erli saved my life? I was out hunting moas. I'd attacked a nice, plump one. And I'd have had it, too, but five of its friends showed up. I'm sure you know how that feels.
- Maybe. What happened next?
- So, I'm surrounded by big, beaky moas. I wasn't scared, but I had some healthy respect stuck in my throat. I look up and I see an oakheat running toward me yelling like a panther with its tail on fire.
- An oakheart? Those are pretty dangerous.
- Yeah, and the moas knew it. They took one look and ran like chickens in the other direction. Then I heard Erli call my name. See, Erli had picked up a leafy branch on the way, and we thought HE was an oakheart.
- So there was no oakheart? I thought this was about Erli saving your life.
- He did! From the moas! He knew if he tried to take all five of them head on I might get hurt, so he came up with a plan to scare them away. And it worked. Those birds are probably still running now. Ha!
- Thanks for the story, kid.
- Not really, and I don't want to know.
