Jade Mechs are dragonjade constructs created by Xunlai Jade corporation of Cantha. They are highly versatile multi-purpose servitors, with functions ranging from security to delivery and advertising systems. They can be both allies, helping in combat and defense scenarios, and enemies, encountered as dangerous opponents repurposed by the Jade Brotherhood during certain missions. The mechanists seen them as a pal.[1]

Lately, certain Jade Mechs in New Kaineng City have begun to go haywire, attacking citizens.

Early years[edit]

The exact date of the first jade mech's creation remains unknown, but jade technology itself emerged after 1820 CC (1310 AE) when Yu Joon first encountered unusual jade received from her mother which carried a magical charge. Experimenting with this, Joon placed a piece into her amber-powered lantern, finding that it glowed twelve times more strongly when powered by this new jade.[2]

By 1829 CC (1319 AE), Joon and her business partner Park Chul-Moo, a co-founder of the Hyeoksin Jade company, acquired the Xunlai Guild and merged it with their operations, rebranding as Xunlai Jade corporation.[3] With exclusive mining rights to the Jade Sea, Xunlai Jade quickly established a monopoly on the extraction of viable dragonjade. However, tensions arose between Joon and Chul-Moo when he began proposing less ethical applications for their technology. Joon, unwilling to compromise her principles, rejected these ideas, leading to a falling out between the two.

By 1833 CC (1323 AE), Chul-Moo eventually left Xunlai Jade and went on to establish the new Jade Brotherhood.[4][5][6]

Under the leadership of genius inventors like Joon, Xunlai Jade turned Cantha into a new era of technological advancement and prosperity, particularly in urban areas, where jade technology became deeply integrated into everyday life. However, due to the limit of supply,[7] jade tech remained an expensive luxury, widening the gap between Cantha’s social classes. In the upper districts of New Kaineng City, the wealthy elite enjoyed the full benefits of jade-powered innovations, personal deluxe jade mechs, and seamless access to the latest advancements from Xunlai Jade. The lower districts, on the other hand, were home to the working class and underprivileged communities, many of whom could not afford jade-powered amenities. Some still relied on steam-power generators and other outdated technologies.[8]

With Xunlai Jade monopolizing the dragonjade supply, the Jade Brotherhood was forced to collect jade parts from the Xunlai's mechs themselves, scavenging and repurposing them for their own use. They also sell knockoff, cheaper copies to Canthan families that could not afford the more reliable but more expensive Xunlai Jade inventions. Even though there are News warnings about the Brotherhood's tech[9], broadcasted around Cantha, and some officials compare using said tech to having a death wish[10], many citizens do not have the luxury of a choice, and rely on the repurposed jade tech. However, even some high class restaurants and teahouses depend on Jade Brotherhood's supply deliveries as well. While public opinion of the Brotherhood was largely negative, their influence extended far beyond the underworld—their tech had become a necessity for many Canthans, regardless of class.

By 1835 CC (1325 AE), to stabilize costs and address the limit supply of dragonjade, the Yong Reactor was constructed as a power plant capable of recharging dragonjade. Previously, Xunlai Jade products were considered expensive luxury items, accessible only to the wealthy. However, with the reactor in place, the company could mass-produce a new line of affordable jade technology, fulfilling Joon's promise to bring jade technology to everyone.[7] The true power source of the reactor remained highly classified, known only to Joon, Empress Ihn, the Canthan government, and the reactor’s workers.[11]

End of Dragons[edit]

New Kaineng City

By 1845 CC (1335 AE), upon the Pact Commander arrived in New Kaineng City, the jade mech at the harbor suddenly had gone haywire. After they neutralized it, and a jade-tech engineer arrived on the scene to assess the situation. The engineer's name was Zhou Yao, and according to them, these jade tech malfunctions had become more and more of a common occurrence in the past year.[12] After the battle, the Pact Commander received a jade bot.

As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that the magic within dragonjade was, in fact, dragon magic. At the heart of the Yong Reactor, Soo-Won had willingly placed herself within the facility as part of a deal with Joon. The reactor filters and regulates the ley-line magic Soo-Won consumed, preventing corruption from overwhelming her. In return, the magic she sheds during this process was harnessed to energize dragonjade. However, with each successive death of an Elder Dragon, the strain on Soo-Won and the reactor intensified, leading to an increase in anomalies and strange behaviors in Cantha’s jade technology.

The destruction of the Yong Reactor severed Xunlai Jade’s ability to efficiently charge dragonjade, throwing Cantha into an energy crisis.[11] To make matters worse, the fallout triggered widespread Void outbreaks across the region.[13]

In the Echovald Wilds, at the Xunlai Jade Junkyard, traces of the Void-corrupted jade can be found. A mad scientist of the Jade Brotherhood, Mi Shen, seized upon these corrupted materials to fuel his own twisted creations. His experiments culminated in the development of IGO and his most dangerous construct yet—Prototype XJ-1, the Void-Touched Junkyard Guardian.[14]

Meanwhile, at the Aspenwood Research Facility, the Jade Brotherhood had been conducting experiments on a superweapon known as the Gods' Vengeance. However, with Void corruption spreading uncontrollably, the facility’s jade mechs and other jade-based technologies spiraled out of control. The once-advanced machines, had become fully corrupted by the Void, turning into unpredictable and dangerous threats.[15]

Secrets of the Obscure[edit]

In 1336 AE, the Pact Commander visits the Skywatch Archipelago, an experimental zone of the wizards, where distorted, alternate-universe reflections of the world below have taken on lives of their own.[16]

One such reflection is the Kaineng fractal, a recreation of New Kaineng City where jade mechs have taken control. Originally designed to maintain cleanliness and productivity, these machines eventually achieved sentience. In their relentless pursuit of optimization, they determined that organic life was the primary source of disorder—a problem that needed to be "cleaned." Now, any living being that enters the city is seen as an obstacle to be eliminated.[17]
