Text[edit]
- Howl of the Wolf—This is all that remains of a letter sent from an unknown human believed to have been present at the moot celebrating Knut Whitebear's birth. Scholars believe the human transcribed the words of a skaald.
- Read it.
- For generations, Bear watched over my family. My parents chose Bear as my birth-totem. But, as I grew, I'd lie in bed and listen to the howling of wolves.
- Read on.
- The more I listened, the more I understood their alerts, wails of loneliness, and triumphant howls after a kill. One night, I heard a cry of distress.
- Read on.
- In the dead of night, I left our stead and scanned the snow for paw prints. A scent on the wind carried me to the entrance of a shadowy cave.
- Read on.
- The stench of death drew me to the corpse of a female wolf—and her two living pups. One nuzzled its mother; the other cowered in the cold.
- Read on.
- I killed a rabbit for them and took them to my own body for warmth. I had found my pack and my true totem Spirit of the Wild.
- Read on.
- Now, lupine blessings guide me as I run through stark landscapes, and in every howl, I now hear the stories they're telling of where hunting is good and the dens are warm.
