Candidate statement[edit]
Ahoy, name's Ventriloquist and I'm what you might call, fresh blood.
I'm not a member of the veteran group of wiki-contributors, such as Ish or Alex, who came here from the original wiki. When I first started editing, I began small and worked my way up. I didn't know how edits worked, what the move button did or how to re-upload files, and my rookieness showed. But with subsequent editing and careful examining I managed to muscle through those hard moments and I pulled through.
It definitely hasn't been an easy ride going in with zero previous experience, but I learned how the wiki ticks and I started participating in larger projects, whether it's creating new pages, documenting new releases, I saw that the wiki needed help and I jumped in.
I'm not a perfect editor, I make/made a lot of mistakes, but I try to learn from them. Hell, I learned something new yesterday! Thanks to the patience of various other users, I got more confident in my edits and just started contributing as much as I could.
Now, I'm not as much of a code-master as the other sysops are, but I could at least delete, move and whatnot without having to bug another administrator to do it, Alex knows best. Auron's nomination sure did come as a surprise, since I never thought I'd be in this position, nor that I would evolve from a regular editor, but it's extremely appreciated that I'm even being considered. With the recent wave of confusing-grammar spammers and various non-registered vandals (I'm looking at you, 216.176.), I believe that I'd be helpful in the culling of said issues, and since I patrol the wiki a lot, no spammer would be safe and no move remnant would remain alive.
To wrap it up, if I were given the title of a sysop, I'd still contribute as much as I do now, but it would upgrade my abilities to help out even more, and would likely remove some pressure from poor ol' Alex's back. --Ventriloquist 13:44, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Discussion[edit]
- Ventriloquist has been an active editor for over a year, with thousands of image uploads and main space edits - meticulously documenting various aspects of the game. He is also friendly and eager to learn, quick to correct his mistakes and avoid making them in the future. Recently, this user (and some others) have performed the rather menial job of wiki babysitting - following an editor around and double-checking all his work. That kind of tedium often turns editors off, but Ventriloquist jumped right in and kept going. He could definitely make use of the delete tool as part of his standard wiki editing, speeding up certain tasks by removing the need to wait for a third party - and he could probably find some time to fight a few vandals or spambots as well. His civility and dedication to the wiki would make him a welcome addition to the sysop team. -Auron 12:23, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
- If this were a vote, he'd have my vote. But it's not, so... he has my full support. I agree with everything Auron said, but especially about his handling of that confusing IP person, who we've finally managed to reform a little bit. —Dr Ishmael 14:26, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
- With the PvX lockdown it was inevitable that someone would turn up without a PvX account... you can have my
votesupport as a sensible editor with a lot of enthusiasm for wiki tidiness. -Chieftain Alex 17:12, 20 August 2014 (UTC) - He's already adminny, just without the tools. Stripe him. — snograt 19:06, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- As Felix has told me, the primary role of admins has been for moderating users, not content. Our current admins don't actively participate in discussions about content, apart from User:Dr ishmael, and User:Poke on occasion. Alex has served to fill in facilitating content with active and new users. However, he can only do so much when he doesn't own the game. I don't see the anon case as sufficient reason for adminship, since our current admins handle vandalism quite admirably. However, it does show he is facilitating content and can communicate politely and effectively. I've noticed such in his contributions on talk pages. I'm only concerned with this area because Alex and Ishmael handle most of the maintenance already and moving pages without the redirects is covered under Extended Editor.--Relyk ~ talk < 20:16, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
