Champion First Mate Horrik
Champion First Mate Horrik
“We all gotta die one day. This old sea dog'll go out in a glorious blaze, blade-to-blade with a worthy foe.
Champion First Mate Horrik is the loyal norn first mate of Captain Mai Trin in the Aetherblades. He carries a cannon from an airship, using it as a gun instead of a normal rifle.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
At some point, Horrik joined the pirate crew that would one day become known as the Aetherblades. To him swashbuckling was about being free; pirates could go wherever they wanted and do as they pleased without masters to dictate their lives. He later listened to the worries of their newest crewmate Ankka who expressed her desire to be useful and how difficult it was for her to adjust to pirate life. Horrik comforted the young asura and encouraged her to embrace freedom without masters. He also witnessed the first meeting between Mai Trin and Ankka.[1]
The Aetherblades started out as a particularly greedy and bloodthirsty pirate crew in which Mai Trin held high rank; when the sylvari terrorist Scarlet Briar found them and presented them with Inquest magitech and allies, the crew became far more dangerous and far more successful at the business of pirating. Officers like Mai kept the Aetherblades organized and active, and their ranks swelled as more and more unaffiliated pirates and pirate bands signed on, lured by the promise of easy money and power. Once they were in, however, they found it problematic to get out again, as Scarlet had plenty of work for them to do and kept them hard at it or they would face her wrath.[2] The Aetherblades managed to steal Pact airships and modified them into their own vessels called aetherships circa 1325 AE.[3]
Living World Season 1[edit]
In 1326 AE, Scarlet ordered the Aetherblades to assassinate Captain Theo Ashford so the disguised Mai Trin could win a vacant seat on the Captain's Council and allow Scarlet to manipulate the free city from within. However, Inspector Ellen Kiel of the Lionguard, the investigator Marjory Delaqua, and the Pact Commander found out about Mai Trin's involvement in Ashford's death. Angered, the cornered Mai admitted her crime and summoned her Aetherblades to distract the party while she retreated into the concealed Aetherblade Retreat within the perimeter of Lion's Arch to command her troops from there.[4]
Ellen Kiel eventually discovered the hideout and led a group of Lionguard, including the Pact Commander who had offered to help them with the investigations, to bring the elusive Aetherblade captain back to face justice for her crimes. The Lionguard fought their way through the retreat, eventually cornering Mai Trin and Horrik who were in the later stages of evacuating the breached base. Upon being discovered, Mai lamented that the sudden Lionguard invasion had foiled her scheme and would make Scarlet mad. The mention of this mysterious Scarlet clued the Lionguard in to the fact that the Aetherblades were actually working for some unseen mastermind.
Realizing that Scarlet might not forgive her for her failure and that the Lionguard wanted to avenge their fallen, Mai resolved to face combat on her own terms. Horrik perished in the following battle, but Mai was apprehended instead after pleading mercy as Ellen wanted the information the Aetherblade captain had.[5] Captain Magnus the Bloody-Handed declared that Ellen would be eligible for the title of captain thanks to Mai Trin's airship which Ellen had confiscated during the raid.[6]
Legacy[edit]
Ankka eventually succeeded Horrik as Mai Trin's new first mate. After chasing the Aetherblades to Cantha in 1335 AE, the Pact Commander discovered audio recordings and letters which revealed what the suriving Aetherblades had been up to after they had helped Mai Trin escape custody into the Mists years earlier. Their fleet had suffered damage and had been aimless since Scarlet's demise, but Ankka had eventually convinced the distraught Mai Trin to send the crew to explore the unstable Fractals of the Mists and scavenge the fractals for parts to fix their fleet. The excursions forced the pirates to encounter fractal echoes of their past selves, including Horrik, and kill the echoes to get access to the parts.[7] Still vengeful, some Aetherblades uttered Horrik's name as a battle cry and intended to avenge him by killing the Commander when they crossed paths with the latter.[8]

- Marjory Delaqua: Ahem. Are you seeing what I'm seeing? Looks like our little helper pirate was helping herself.
- Investigator Ellen Kiel: Mai Trin, you're under arrest, by Lionguard authority. You will present yourself–
- Mai Trin: If it weren't for that detective and her cronies, you'd never have known it was me.
- Mai Trin: (laugh) My plan was to open a seat on the council so I could fill it. Now, it's to punish you all for spoiling my first one.
- Mai Trin: Come out, my clockwork crew! Let's show them what it feels like to be impaled on the sharp tip of misfortune.

- Mai Trin: This has all gone to crud. Scarlet's gonna have my noggin for screwing up.
- Champion First Mate Horrik: What now, Captain? It'll take cannonballs to get out of here alive.
- Mai Trin: Either way, I'm dead, so let's wind our springs and ride this escapement to the end. [...]
- Mai Trin: Enough! You've won. Give me quarter and I'll tell you everything.

- Magnus the Bloody Handed: We're gearing up to replace Ashford. His second died a few weeks ago in that whole Molten Alliance uproar.
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: So, there will have to be a council election?
- Magnus the Bloody Handed: That's right. And I want you to go for it.
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: What? I don't have that kind of wealth, and I'm not a ship's captain.
- Magnus the Bloody Handed: Then, you'd better get creative. I put your name in, and I commandeered the abandoned Aetherblade airship for you.

- Ankka: We have no other choice. How else do we get the parts? Hm? How?
- Ivan: Uh... What you're saying is, we travel through fractals in the Mists, find our past selves, and steal from them?
- Captain Mai Trin: That's not possible. And even if it were, wouldn't we just be screwing up our own pasts?
- Ankka: They're fractals. Echoes of pure potentiality. Our own pasts are secure. We'd just be exploring the alternatives.
- Ivan: Fractals are inherently unstable. We can't waltz around the Mists wherever we please like it's Southsun Cove.
- Captain Mai Trin: We would have to travel to...dozens of fractals.
- Captain Mai Trin: Stable fractals.
- Renyak: Hundreds. For the right parts. Even then, using those parts could have...unpredictable results. Heh heh.
- Ivan: And you're okay with this? Fighting, maybe killing yourselves hundreds of times over?
- Ankka: I ask again: How else do we get the parts?
