Decimus the Historian
Decimus the Historian
“Never trust the past. There has been too much forgotten, too many things hidden beneath the sand of ages. Even your own memory can lie to you...
Decimus the Historian, of the Durmand Priory, wrote "The Movement of the World"[1], a document kept in the Priory, and quoted himself several times in the "Movement." He seems to be an expert on the happenings between Kormir's ascension and the present day.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Decimus the Historian joined the Durmand Priory and eventually became the order's chief chronicler. He became even more renowned in his advanced age after he published his seminal essay titled "The Movement of the World" which discussed the history of Tyria, and what little was known of later developments in Cantha and Elona since the Ascension of Kormir and what had shaped the world, including the rise of the Elder Dragons. In his essay's conclusion he urged heroes of the new age to rise up to face the spreading menace of the Elder Dragons.
Personal story[edit]
Following Magister Sieran's sacrifice against the Elder Dragon Zhaitan's Risen forces in the Battle of Claw Island in 1325 AE, Decimus lamented her loss and consoled grieving Priory personnel, including the Magister who had been working as her partner. Once the Priory joined forces with the Order of Whispers and the Vigil to form the Pact and had successfully retaken Claw Island from the Risen, Decimus congratulated the Magister whose actions had contributed to the war effort and avenged Sieran and the other casualties.
After Pact Marshal Trahearne had successfully purified the Artesian Waters of Orr from Zhaitan's corruption and thus weakened the Elder Dragon considerably, Decimus traveled to the Pact's forward base of Fort Trinity. While there, he met with the Pact Commander who had helped Trahearne in his important mission. Decimus congratulated the Commander and assured them that the Pact could finally face Zhaitan and prevail in the battle to come.
End of Dragons[edit]
After Cantha reopened its borders in 1335 AE, Decimus traveled to the new hub of international visitors at Arborstone, and got to read Shing Jea Island Lost Histories written by the former curator for the Kaineng historical society, Balam Ri, with the help of the Commander. By the time the Commander visited Arborstone, Balam Ri pointed out Decimus's interest in their work, and Decimus once again thanked the Commander for their accomplishments. The historian also hoped to include the work in a new anthology he was organizing. The pair gladly gave Decimus their permission so more eyes could see the results of their hard chronicling work and learn about Cantha's troubled past. Balam Ri could hardly contain her excitement much to Decimus's amusement.[2]
