Battered Tengu Refugee Journal
The Huangs are getting nervous. We've been hiding in their barn now for seven months, and Ministry officials have been close to discovering us at least a dozen times. I could barely get Jiki into the straw last time. He doesn't understand why we have to do this. I had to hold his beak tight to keep him quiet.
The Huangs heard a rumor of a group of “Kestrels" who will take tengu to a place of safety here in Cantha. Once a month they stop nearby to collect refugees. I don't know how I'll convince Mother, or how I'll keep the fledglings quiet, but I have to try...
We've been on the road three days now. We're never quiet enough for the Kestrel, Xiri. He's stern and humorless. Jiki gets in trouble constantly—I have to remind him to listen to the Kestrel, to
move deliberately, to look for the spaces others won't think to. We can't get caught.
We had to leave Mother behind. She just couldn't do the things Xiri asks. Her body is old, frail, and her mind too inflexible. She told me I had to go, to keep the fledglings safe. I will miss her. I've lost so many—my father, my Hiori—but my first duty is to my fledglings.
We arrived at our destination—a Kurzick ruin in Echovald. At first I didn't think anyone was here, and then I looked the way the Kestrel taught us, to see what we might not normally think to, and I realized there were dozens of tengu, more than a hundred, scattered around, living in the quiet places. Xiri told me this was our home now, as long as we wanted, and his stern demeanor broke, and he told us he was proud of us, Jiki especially, who is almost a shadow now.
