A musical instrument is a type of novelty or consumable that, when activated, equips a series of skills that can be used to play music.
While most musical instruments provide notes to play freely, some of the novelty musical instruments are music boxes that have preset sounds and melodies.

Notes[edit]
- The volume of musical instruments can be adjusted in the sound options.
- The lute can be played with in Auric Basin without owning it. At the top of the falls in Auric Basin (~5500 units above Fahautl Grounds) there is a hylek NPC named Nelisqua that wants you to try playing a duet with them using their spare lute. As long as you stay in range, you can continue to play the lute for free for as long as you wish.
- There are three musical instruments that are not gizmos or consumables, but can be played by interacting with items in the open world. One is the Bell Choir Ensemble, which is only available during Wintersday. The other two are Pipe Organs, which are available year-round, and can be found in Quetzal Bay and the Stronghold of Ebonhawke.
